About the COURSE

The course Scour Analysis of Bridges aims to provide a comprehensive training in the prevention of hydraulic-related failures of bridges. The course will help the professionals understand and learn about the quantitative techniques for estimating long-term degradation, and calculating the magnitude of general and local scour at bridge piers and abutments for simple and complex substructures. Scour Analysis of Bridges course will impart knowledge on the selection and design of countermeasures scour problems, including development of a plan of action and an introduction to fixed and portable instrumentation for scour monitoring.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Estimate the magnitude of scour at bridge piers and abutments and in the bridge reach

  Course Leader

Our Course Leader graduated with an Honours B.Sc. degree from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. He obtained his M.Sc. in Structural Engineering with Distinction from the University of Surrey in 2002. His PhD work focused on the fatigue analysis of riveted railway bridges and was funded by EPSRC and Network Rail. He has numerous publications in high impact journals and he has also presented his work in important conferences in the area of bridges. He is currently teaching Steel Design and Bridge Engineering & Management at the University of Surrey. Specialties: Fatigue of steel bridges, bridge management, rail traffic models, climate change effects on built infrastructure, robustness of structures and transportation networks, scour of bridges, Eurocodes on steel design.
